Diagnostics and Laboratory

On site laboratory, ultrasound and electrocardiography, so that testing, results and treatment happen in one visit rather than three.

A diagnosis delayed by a laboratory across town is a diagnosis delayed. Our laboratory and imaging sit inside the hospital, which means a doctor can order a test during your consultation, see the result the same visit in many cases, and act on it before you leave.

The laboratory operates alongside the 24 hour service, so an emergency admission at night does not wait until morning for a full blood count or a cross match.

Laboratory services

Our laboratory covers the routine and urgent testing a secondary care hospital needs, with quality control on every run.

  • Haematology: full blood count, packed cell volume, genotype, blood grouping, cross matching, clotting screen, ESR
  • Chemistry: electrolytes, urea and creatinine, liver function, lipid profile, fasting and random glucose, HbA1c, uric acid
  • Microbiology: urine, wound, stool, high vaginal and blood cultures with sensitivity
  • Parasitology: malaria rapid diagnostic tests and blood film microscopy
  • Serology: HIV, hepatitis B and C, VDRL, pregnancy testing, H pylori
  • Endocrine: thyroid function, prostate specific antigen, fertility hormone profiles
  • Urinalysis and microscopy

Imaging and cardiac testing

We provide obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound including dating, anomaly and growth scans, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, and soft tissue scanning, alongside electrocardiography and echocardiography where indicated.

Where a study requires equipment beyond our site, such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, we arrange it with a partner centre and interpret the result within your care here rather than handing you a film and leaving you to it.

How to prepare

Fasting samples, principally fasting glucose and lipid profile, require eight to twelve hours without food, water excepted. Take your usual medications unless specifically told otherwise, and tell the phlebotomist if you are on blood thinners.

Bring previous results if you have them. A trend over time is far more useful than a single value, and it frequently prevents repeat testing.

What this will cost you

Cost depends on what you actually need, and we would rather quote you accurately than post a figure that turns out not to apply. Call the front desk or send us a message with what you have been told so far, and we will give you the figure before anything is booked. If you hold an HMO plan we will check what it covers for this specific treatment first.

Common questions

How quickly do results come back?

Most routine haematology and chemistry results are available the same day. Cultures take longer by nature, typically 48 to 72 hours, because the organism has to grow before it can be identified.

Can I do tests here without seeing a doctor?

Yes, direct access laboratory testing is available. We would encourage a consultation to interpret anything abnormal rather than leaving you with a number and no context.

Who you will see

Care in this department is coordinated by our clinical team at Magodo, with specialist input arranged where your condition calls for it. If you would like to be seen by a particular clinician, say so when you book and we will arrange it where the clinic schedule allows.

Speak to someone now, or book a time that suits you

The front desk answers at every hour of the day. If it is urgent, call. If it can wait, the booking form takes about two minutes.
