Orthopaedics

Fractures, joint pain, back and neck problems, sports injuries and the surgical and non surgical management of bone and joint disease.

Bone and joint problems in Lagos come from two dominant sources: road traffic injury, which the city produces in volume, and degenerative joint disease in a population that is living longer and moving less.

Our orthopaedic service covers fracture care, joint and back pain, sports and soft tissue injury, and the assessment of chronic joint disease, with physiotherapy in the same building so that rehabilitation begins immediately rather than after a separate referral.

Fracture and injury care

Fractures are assessed clinically and by imaging, then managed by immobilisation, reduction or surgical fixation depending on the bone involved, the pattern of the break and how displaced it is.

One thing worth stating plainly. Traditional bone setting remains widespread in Nigeria and the complications that follow it, including limb threatening compartment syndrome, gangrene, malunion and permanent deformity, are among the most avoidable injuries seen in Nigerian hospitals. If a limb has been injured, have it imaged before it is manipulated.

Back and neck pain

Most back pain is mechanical and improves with movement, targeted physiotherapy, weight management and time. Prolonged bed rest makes it worse rather than better.

Certain features change the picture and need prompt assessment: pain following significant trauma, pain with fever or unexplained weight loss, progressive weakness or numbness in the legs, and any disturbance of bladder or bowel control, which is an emergency.

Osteoarthritis and joint pain

Knee osteoarthritis is the most common presentation, particularly among women over fifty. Treatment begins with what changes the mechanics: weight reduction, quadriceps strengthening, appropriate footwear and activity modification, supported by analgesia and, in some cases, injection.

Joint replacement is considered when pain is no longer controlled and function is significantly limited despite proper non surgical management. Where a case requires arthroplasty beyond our scope, we refer with the full assessment complete.

What this will cost you

Cost depends on what you actually need, and we would rather quote you accurately than post a figure that turns out not to apply. Call the front desk or send us a message with what you have been told so far, and we will give you the figure before anything is booked. If you hold an HMO plan we will check what it covers for this specific treatment first.

Common questions

Do you handle emergency fractures at night?

Yes. The hospital is open 24 hours and orthopaedic emergencies are assessed on arrival.

Will I definitely need surgery for a fracture?

No. Many fractures heal well with immobilisation alone. Surgery is for fractures that are unstable, badly displaced, involve a joint surface, or will not heal properly otherwise.

Who you will see

Care in this department is coordinated by our clinical team at Magodo, with specialist input arranged where your condition calls for it. If you would like to be seen by a particular clinician, say so when you book and we will arrange it where the clinic schedule allows.
