Urology
Prostate health, urinary symptoms, stones, infection and male reproductive health, assessed properly rather than treated by guesswork.
Urological symptoms are among the most under reported in Nigeria because men in particular delay presenting, and prostate disease in men of African descent tends to appear earlier and behave more aggressively than in other populations.
Our urology service covers prostate assessment, urinary tract infection, stones, bladder symptoms, male infertility and erectile dysfunction, and it starts from investigation rather than assumption.
Prostate health
An enlarged prostate causing urinary symptoms, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, is common with age and is not cancer. But the symptoms overlap almost entirely with those of prostate cancer, so the two cannot be told apart without assessment.
Assessment involves symptom scoring, a digital rectal examination, prostate specific antigen testing and an ultrasound measuring the gland and the residual urine after voiding. Men of African descent should discuss starting prostate screening from around forty five, and earlier where there is a family history.
Urinary infection and stones
Recurrent urinary tract infection in men, and in women where it keeps returning, is not simply treated repeatedly. It is investigated, because a recurring infection usually has a reason, whether obstruction, a stone, incomplete emptying or diabetes.
Kidney and bladder stones present with severe loin pain, blood in the urine or infection. Imaging determines the size and position, and that determines whether the stone will pass with fluids and pain relief or needs intervention.
What this will cost you
Cost depends on what you actually need, and we would rather quote you accurately than post a figure that turns out not to apply. Call the front desk or send us a message with what you have been told so far, and we will give you the figure before anything is booked. If you hold an HMO plan we will check what it covers for this specific treatment first.
Common questions
What does a raised PSA mean?
It means further assessment is needed, not that you have cancer. PSA also rises with infection, recent catheterisation, benign enlargement and even recent cycling. Your urologist will interpret it in context.
Is an enlarged prostate the same as prostate cancer?
No. They are separate conditions, though they can be present together, and they cause overlapping symptoms, which is exactly why examination and testing are necessary.
Who you will see
Care in this department is coordinated by our clinical team at Magodo, with specialist input arranged where your condition calls for it. If you would like to be seen by a particular clinician, say so when you book and we will arrange it where the clinic schedule allows.
