Ear, Nose and Throat
Hearing, sinus, throat, voice and airway conditions in adults and children, including the ear infections that cause preventable hearing loss.
Ear, nose and throat conditions are dismissed more often than almost any other group of complaints, and the cost of dismissing them is hearing that does not come back. Chronic middle ear infection in childhood is a leading cause of preventable hearing impairment in Nigeria, and it usually starts as something a parent was told would settle.
Our ENT service assesses and treats ear disease and hearing loss, sinus and nasal conditions, throat and tonsil problems, voice disorders, snoring and airway obstruction, and foreign bodies in the ear, nose and throat.
Ear and hearing
We examine the ear canal and drum directly, assess hearing, and treat infection, wax obstruction, perforation and fluid in the middle ear. Persistent discharge from an ear is never normal and should never be treated with repeated drops alone without someone looking inside.
In children, unexplained delay in speech, poor performance at school, or a habit of turning the television up should prompt a hearing assessment rather than an assumption about behaviour.
Nose, sinus and throat
Allergic rhinitis is extremely common in Lagos, driven by dust, harmattan, generator fumes and mould, and it is routinely mistaken for recurrent catarrh or repeated infection. It is treated quite differently, and treating it correctly stops months of unnecessary antibiotics.
We also manage sinusitis, nasal obstruction, nosebleeds, tonsillitis and its complications, hoarseness lasting beyond three weeks, which always requires examination of the vocal cords, and snoring with suspected obstructive sleep apnoea.
What this will cost you
Cost depends on what you actually need, and we would rather quote you accurately than post a figure that turns out not to apply. Call the front desk or send us a message with what you have been told so far, and we will give you the figure before anything is booked. If you hold an HMO plan we will check what it covers for this specific treatment first.
Common questions
My child keeps getting ear infections. Is that normal?
Common is not the same as normal. Repeated ear infections need proper examination and a hearing check, because untreated chronic middle ear disease damages hearing permanently.
How long should a hoarse voice last before I worry?
Any hoarseness persisting beyond three weeks needs the vocal cords examined, particularly in anyone who smokes.
